A counterfeit coin can look convincing. It is much harder for it to measure convincingly. This checker compares your coin against 129 verified specifications on three physical fronts at once — mass, diameter and depth — and condenses the result into a single authenticity score. Note: Treat this as a physical screening rather than a certificate. Instrumental analysis — XRF or ultrasound — reaches conclusions that measurement alone cannot, and it is worth arranging for anything of substantial value. It is also worth knowing that Ireland operates one of the oldest hallmarking regimes in Europe: articles of precious metal offered for sale here must be assayed and marked by the Assay Office at Dublin Castle, which has been doing the job since 1637. Legal-tender coinage falls outside that requirement, so a bullion coin will never carry an Irish hallmark.

How to Tell a Genuine Coin from a Convincing Fake

The higher gold climbs, the more attractive forgery becomes — and gold has rarely been higher. There is a consolation in that, though, and it is a substantial one: the laws of physics cannot be counterfeited. Mass, breadth and depth are bound together by the density of the metal. Get all three to agree simultaneously and there is scarcely any material left that could be hiding underneath.

Why Density Gives Counterfeiters Away

No two metals pack the same mass into the same space. Substitute the material while keeping the weight, and the coin is forced to change shape — which is precisely what a caliper is for.

Worked Example: Copper in Place of Gold

Suppose a forger reaches for copper. The genuine coin fits 31.103 g of gold into some 1.61 cm³; copper, at 8.96 g/cm³, would need about 3.47 cm³ for the same mass — 2.15 times the volume. Something has to give, and it is the thickness: roughly 4.3 mm instead of 2.8 mm. No caliper on earth would miss that.

Tungsten — the serious problem

Only one metal genuinely troubles this approach. Tungsten measures 19.25 g/cm³, a mere 0.36 % away from gold, which allows a well-made fake to satisfy both the scale and the caliper.

Getting Accurate Readings from a Caliper

The scale comes first, the caliper immediately after. For €15 to €40 you acquire ±0.02 mm of certainty, which is finer than any deviation that would matter in practice.

Zero

Bring the jaws together and hit ZERO. The faces need to be clean and completely dry beforehand.

Measure Diameter

Hold the coin in the outer jaws with the line running through the centre. Rotate 60°, measure again, repeat, then take the mean of three.

Measure Thickness

Switch to the depth faces and work in the middle of the coin, never against the rim. Three readings, averaged.

The Magnet Test and What It Actually Proves

Precious metals are diamagnetic: gold, silver and platinum are pushed away by a magnet, imperceptibly but consistently. The base metals that forgers reach for — iron, nickel — behave in the opposite manner and are pulled towards it with obvious force.

How the test works

Tilt the coin to about 45° and release a powerful neodymium magnet (N52) at the upper edge. Across genuine metal the descent is visibly retarded, nothing like the way the same magnet drops down a sheet of glass. Eddy currents circulating in the conductive metal are what hold it back.

Its limits: a copper or brass forgery is not magnetic either and will therefore pass without difficulty, while tungsten is drawn very slightly towards the magnet rather than repelled by it. The test eliminates candidates; it never confirms one. Its value lies entirely in what it contributes alongside weight and dimensions.

The Ping Test: What a Genuine Coin Sounds Like

Resonance is a property of the material, not of the design. Genuine precious metal answers a tap with a bright note that carries for two to five seconds; a filled or substituted coin swallows the vibration and produces a brief, dead sound instead.

Hearing a tungsten core

Density is where tungsten resembles gold; stiffness is where it does not. A Young's modulus of 411 GPa against gold's 79 GPa is an enormous gap, and it translates directly into a higher resonance and a curter, harder sound. For that reason the ping test remains among the most trustworthy amateur methods of unmasking tungsten.

Laboratory Methods: XRF, Archimedes and Ultrasound

The home battery of tests — weight, dimensions, magnet, sound — disposes of most forgeries perfectly well. It is when the sum at stake is large, or the doubt persists, that laboratory methods earn their fee.

Common Questions About Verifying Coins

What is the quickest way to verify a gold coin?
Follow the order and do not skip ahead. First, study the coin: strike quality, sharpness of detail. Second, weigh it to 0.01 g. Third, caliper the diameter and the thickness. Fourth, run a neodymium magnet across it. Fifth, tap the rim and listen to how the note behaves. Pass all five and the coin is very probably what it claims to be; fail one and it is time for an XRF reading.
Is there a fee for having a coin examined?
Frequently nothing. Established bullion dealers tend to include an XRF check with a purchase, and where they charge for it the figure rarely exceeds €50. Independent testing services generally quote €20–100 depending on how many pieces are involved. The expense is easily justified after a private-sale purchase, or where no certificate accompanies the coin.
Does the magnet catch a tungsten core?
In practice, usually. The distinction does exist — tungsten is weakly paramagnetic and drifts a fraction towards the magnet, while gold is diamagnetic and edges away — but it is a fine judgement even with an N52 magnet in hand. Far more decisive are the ping test, where the difference in elasticity makes the note plainly wrong, and ultrasound, where 5,220 m/s against 3,240 m/s leaves no room for interpretation.
How exact do my caliper readings have to be?
Anything down to ±0.05 mm will do the job, and a typical digital caliper delivers ±0.02 mm without effort. Method counts for more than specification: three readings at different angles, averaged; the diameter taken squarely through the centre; the thickness taken well inside the rim rather than on it.
What are the most commonly faked gold coins?
In descending order of frequency: Krugerrand, American Eagle, Maple Leaf and Vienna Philharmonic. The Krugerrand attracts the most attention for the simple reason that it is traded everywhere and always finds a buyer. Britannias are copied less often because the security features are genuinely difficult to reproduce, and Chinese Pandas less often still, since the design changes with every year of issue.
Do I really need more than one check?
Not one, ever. Every method leaves a gap: weight will not catch tungsten, the magnet will not catch copper, and dimensions reveal nothing at all about what lies beneath the surface. Reliability comes from three tests pointing the same way — weight and dimensions plus either the magnet or the sound. That is the reasoning behind combining three measurements into one score here rather than presenting them separately.
What if the result comes back negative?
Pause before concluding anything. Deviations arise routinely from uncalibrated scales, contaminated caliper faces or ordinary circulation wear on an older piece. Recalibrate, clean everything and repeat the measurements carefully. Only if the discrepancy survives that should you take the coin to a dealer or testing service for an XRF analysis.
Where do I go for a professional examination?
Bullion dealers, refiners and specialist coin businesses all provide testing, generally by XRF and occasionally by ultrasound, and the process takes minutes rather than days. Prefer somewhere with LBMA accreditation or membership of a recognised numismatic association. Do not confuse this with hallmarking: the Assay Office at Dublin Castle, in continuous operation since 1637, marks articles of precious metal sold in Ireland, but coins are outside its remit, and no bullion coin will ever bear an Irish assay mark.
