Industrial Gold / Electronics

Industrial gold refers to gold used in technical applications — chiefly the electronics industry — rather than for investment or jewellery.

Gold is generally thought of as an investment and jewellery metal — yet around 7 to 8 per cent of world gold demand goes to technical applications. Of that, the electronics industry dominates, harnessing the metal's unique physical properties deliberately: outstanding electrical conductivity, complete corrosion resistance and near-limitless ductility. The current gold price largely governs how hard manufacturers look for substitutes or lean on recycling.

Why gold in electronics?

Gold does not oxidise even under extreme conditions, forms no insulating surface film and thereby delivers durable, reliable electrical contacts — a property no other economically available metal offers to the same degree. The main areas of use at a glance:

Bonding wire — the single most important segment

Gold bonding wire connects the integrated circuit (die) to the package frame. It must be extremely thin (from 15 µm), high-purity (999.9) and mechanically stable. Although the industry has increasingly switched to cheaper copper and silver bonding wires since the 2010s, gold remains the standard in highly reliable applications (automotive, medical technology, aerospace) — wherever failure is not an option.

Electroplated gold (ENIG / HASL-Au)

On circuit boards gold is usually applied as Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG): an ultra-thin gold layer (about 0.05–0.12 µm) over a nickel barrier protects the solder pads from oxidation and ensures good solderability. The gold quantity per board is tiny — but summed over billions of boards worldwide it is considerable.

Urban mining: recovery from electronic scrap

Because the gold quantities used per device are small, recovery only pays at industrial scale. Even so, one tonne of old circuit boards contains an estimated 200 to 400 grams of gold — far more than a tonne of average gold ore (typically 1–5 g/t). This makes recovery from electronic scrap (urban mining) a significant secondary supplier.

Palladium and platinum-group metals as companions

Alongside gold, palladium and other platinum-group metals also play an important part in electronics: palladium is found in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), fitted in practically every electronic device. The price moves of both metals are therefore closely tied to global electronics production.

Price effect and substitution

If the gold price rises sharply, manufacturers intensify the search for alternatives (copper or silver bonding wire, thinner layers) or reduce the gold content in alloys. This substitution pressure dampens industrial demand and sets it apart from investment demand, which tends to increase at higher prices. The historical price record shows how strongly this effect showed up in high-price phases (for example 2011–2012, 2020).

In brief

Industrial gold in electronics is a small but technically indispensable segment of the gold market. The combination of corrosion resistance, conductivity and workability makes gold the first choice wherever reliability matters more than material cost. Through scrap-gold recycling and urban mining, a growing share of the processed electronics gold flows back into the cycle.
