Urban mining is the targeted recovery of precious metals and other valuable materials from electronic scrap, old devices and industrial waste streams, as a complement to primary mining.
Modern electronics are crammed with precious metals: a single smartphone holds gold, silver, palladium and copper in tiny but measurable quantities. Urban mining - literally "city mining" - taps precisely this above-ground ore body of discarded devices, industrial waste and end-of-life vehicles. Compared with primary mining, the precious metal content of electronic scrap can be ten to a hundred times higher than that of a typical gold seam.
Why electronic scrap is so valuable
The concentration of critical metals in e-waste far outstrips primary deposits:

Concentrations like these make urban mining economically attractive - especially when palladium prices and gold prices are high.
The recycling process, step by step
- Collection and sorting - old devices are separated by category (smartphones, circuit boards, catalysts, cables).
- Mechanical pre-treatment - shredding, screening and air separation split out plastics, ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals.
- Pyrometallurgy - smelting in a furnace or converter; precious metals collect in a copper-lead alloy (the black-copper route).
- Hydrometallurgy - wet-chemical leaching with acids or aqua regia, then selective precipitation of the individual metals.
- Refining - specialised refineries (Umicore, Heraeus and the like) refine the metals to investment fineness and produce certified bars or granules.

What it means for the global precious metal market
Secondary metals from urban mining now cover a substantial share of world demand:
- Gold: recycling (jewellery plus industry) supplies, on the World Gold Council's figures, around 25-28% of annual total supply.
- Silver: industrial recycling contributes roughly 15-20% of total supply.
- Palladium: catalyst recycling delivers a steadily growing share - significant because palladium is rarely won as a standalone primary metal, but mostly as a by-product of platinum or nickel mining.
Growing electrification (electric mobility, solar installations, data centres) raises both consumption and the future potential of the recycling stream.
The legal framework in Ireland and the EU
Ireland implements the EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, which obliges producers to take back and properly dispose of end-of-life devices; the scheme is administered nationally (for example through WEEE Ireland). The EU Batteries Regulation (2023) tightens recycling requirements for lithium batteries. For consumers, returning old equipment to retailers and local civic amenity sites is free of charge.
