Serial Number on Bars

The serial number on bars is an individual identification feature that refineries and minting operations apply to their gold bars and silver bars. It links the physical bar to a manufacturer's certificate and allows buyers, dealers and authorities to trace the origin and authenticity of a precious metal product seamlessly.

What is the serial number for?

The number fulfils several functions at the same time:

1. Authenticity testing – via the manufacturer's database it can be checked whether the serial number, weight and fineness match the issued certificate.
2. Certificate matching – many bars come sealed in a so-called certified bar (blister); the number on the card must match the engraved number.
3. Traceability – in responsible gold programmes the serial number documents the supply route from the doré bar to the end product and excludes conflict gold.
4. Registration and insurance – warehouses and insurers use serial numbers for the unique assignment of stored holdings.

Where is the serial number applied?

On cast bars (cast bar) it is usually stamped or lasered directly into the surface. On minted bars (minted bar) it is often located on the reverse or is printed into the blister certificate. Small denominations under 100 g sometimes carry the serial number only on the packaging, not on the bar itself.

LBMA Good Delivery standard

For large-format trading bars the LBMA Good Delivery standard prescribes a permanently applied serial number. A roughly 400-ounce gold bar must carry, alongside the serial number, fineness, weight and manufacturer stamp, also the year of melting – all on the bar surface itself, without separate packaging.

Checking the serial number when buying

Certificate no. == engraved serial number?  → ✓ Consistent
Weight on certificate == weighing?          → ✓ Plausible
Manufacturer database confirms number?      → ✓ Authentic

Tax notes

The serial number itself has no tax influence on the value of the bar, but eases proof of the date and price of acquisition. In the United Kingdom the difference between disposal proceeds and acquisition cost determines any Capital Gains Tax liability, so keeping the certificate and its serial number aids record-keeping.
