Minted Bar

A minted bar is a precious-metal bar produced by mechanical minting with a smooth, dimensionally precise surface and stamped information such as fineness, weight and maker's logo.
A minted bar is created not by casting but through a multi-stage mechanical process: first, high-purity precious metal is rolled into a band or strip, from which blanks are then punched using a stamping tool. These blanks are subsequently minted on high-pressure presses that work the fineness, weight, maker's logo and often a serial number into the surface. The result is a visually even, dimensionally precise bar with sharp edges and a mirror-smooth or finely matted surface – considerably more uniform than a cast bar.
Manufacture and Features
The minting process requires considerable tooling effort and is more expensive per unit than casting. In return it delivers reproducible dimensions with tolerances of sometimes under ± 0.01 mm and a homogeneous surface without cavities or casting streaks. Renowned manufacturers such as PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, Heraeus and Argor-Heraeus additionally equip their minted bars with security features – for example finely rastered guilloché patterns or holographic elements that make counterfeiting more difficult.

- Fineness (e.g. 999.9 Au or 999 Ag)
- Weight in grams or troy ounces
- Maker's logo and name
- Serial number (usual from around 5 g)
- Mint mark of the refinery

Denominations and Packaging
Minted bars are especially widespread in small weight units: 1 g, 2.5 g, 5 g, 10 g, 20 g, 1 troy ounce (31.1 g) and 50 g cover the bulk of the private-investor market. From around 5 g upwards, the bars are frequently supplied sealed in a transparent plastic cartridge – the so-called assay card or blister packaging. This packaging protects against fingerprints and mechanical damage and contains a printed certificate of authenticity from the refinery.
Note: Opening the original packaging can reduce the resale value, as dealers generally buy sealed bars on better terms.

Authenticity Testing
The precise dimensions of minted bars make authenticity testing easier: deviations in weight or thickness that indicate tungsten cores or lead can be quickly detected with a fine scale and a caliper. In Brief
Minted bars combine the highest dimensional accuracy, an attractive appearance and easy authenticity testing – and are therefore particularly suited to private investors who want to enter and exit flexibly in small weight units. The higher premium compared to cast bars is offset by better tradability and broader dealer acceptance.
