Certified Bar (Blister)
Also: Blister bar, Assay card, Certicard bar
A precious metal bar firmly sealed in a tamper-evident plastic holder (blister) and carrying a printed authenticity certificate from the refinery.
A certified bar in a blister combines the physical precious metal bar with a directly printed or enclosed authenticity certificate, permanently fixed in a sealed plastic display pack (blister). The seal is constructed so that opening becomes irreversibly visible — a broken blister is considered a loss of trust and considerably reduces the dealer value. Buyers thereby obtain at a glance a guarantee of fineness, weight, serial number and refinery, without having to touch the piece itself.
Structure and features
A typical blister bar consists of three layers:
- Bar – usually a minted fine gold bar (999.9 ‰) or fine silver bar (999 ‰) of small to medium denomination.
- Carrier/certificate card – sturdy card or aluminium with details of weight, fineness, serial number and the logo of the refinery.
- Blister film – transparent, heat-sealed or ultrasonically welded plastic layer that fixes the bar to the card.
Leading refineries such as PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, Heraeus or Argor-Heraeus additionally emboss a hologram or a QR code for digital verification on the card.
Typical denominations
| Weight | Metal | Fineness |
|---|---|---|
| 1 g | Gold | 999.9 ‰ |
| 5 g | Gold | 999.9 ‰ |
| 10 g | Gold | 999.9 ‰ |
| 1 g | Silver | 999 ‰ |
| 10 g | Platinum | 999.5 ‰ |
Small denominations are suitable for gifts, savings plans and beginners — the gold calculator shows the current metal value per gram.
Premium and liquidity
Certified bars cost a higher premium (agio) than comparable loose bars because of packaging, certification and handling. On resale the rule is: blister intact = full dealer buying price; opened blister = melt value basis minus discount. The current melt value is determined by the melt value calculator. For denominations up to 100 g the premium is typically considerably higher than for kilo bars — that is the price for counterfeit security and easy storage.
Counterfeit security and testing
The sealed unit considerably hinders manipulations such as drilling out or replacement with tungsten cores. Nevertheless, experts recommend additional methods in case of doubt: weight check, density measurement by Archimedes or X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). The authenticity checker provides reference values for weight and dimensions.
Note: The tax treatment (VAT, Capital Gains Tax) depends on the metal, holding facts and individual circumstances. Under UK law, investment gold is VAT-exempt (HMRC; fineness ≥ 995‰), while silver and platinum bars are subject to 20 % VAT; gold bars are subject to CGT on gains above the annual exempt amount. This is not tax or investment advice.
In brief
Certified bars in a blister combine physical security with documented authenticity and are particularly suited to small weight classes and secure onward transfer — as long as the seal remains intact, the resale value is straightforwardly verifiable.
