Semi-Precious Metal

A semi-precious metal is a metal that shows some resistance to corrosion but does not possess the full chemical inertness of the precious metals.
The term semi-precious metal is not a strictly defined category in chemistry but a common umbrella term for metals that fall between the fully corrosion-resistant precious metals and the base metals (such as iron or aluminium). IUPAC does not recognise the category formally; in practice — in the jewellery and coin trade and in metallurgy — it is nonetheless widely used.
Which metals count
The grouping varies by source, but the following metals are most often classed as semi-precious:
- Copper (Cu) – the best-known semi-precious metal; in air it forms a protective patina (verdigris) but dissolves in dilute acids.
- Silver (Ag) – depending on the view it is also classed as a precious metal; it tarnishes in air and in sulphur compounds (see tarnishing).
- Lead (Pb), tin (Sn), bismuth (Bi) and mercury (Hg) – further members often cited.
In the narrower sense of the precious-metals trade, silver is usually grouped with the precious metals (investment silver, coin silver), while copper is regarded as the classic semi-precious metal.
The electrochemical background
The classification is based on the electrochemical series: precious metals have a high positive standard potential and do not react with dilute acids. Semi-precious metals sit in a middle range — more resistant than iron, but less inert than gold or platinum.

Why it matters for the precious-metals market
Copper plays a double role in the precious-metals market: as an alloying metal it gives gold and silver hardness and colour (for example red gold, 835 silver). As an asset class in its own right it is traded on the London Metal Exchange (LME) and COMEX — economists regard the copper price as a leading indicator of the economy ("Dr. Copper").

Semi-precious metals sit chemically between the precious metals and the base metals: they corrode under certain conditions but are far more resistant than iron.
