Minted Bar

A minted bar is a precious metal bar produced by mechanical stamping, with a smooth, dimensionally precise surface and struck-in information such as fineness, weight and maker logo.

A minted bar is made not by casting but through a multi-stage mechanical process: first, high-purity metal is rolled into a band or strip, from which blanks are punched out with a stamping tool. These blanks are then struck on high-pressure presses that work the fineness, weight, maker logo and often a serial number into the surface. The outcome is a visually even, dimensionally precise bar with sharp edges and a mirror-smooth or finely matt surface — far more uniform than a cast bar.

Production and characteristics

Minting demands considerable tooling and costs more per unit than casting. In return it delivers reproducible dimensions with tolerances sometimes under ± 0.01 mm and a homogeneous surface free of pits or pour lines. Leading makers such as PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, Heraeus and Argor-Heraeus fit their minted bars with additional security features — for example finely rastered guilloche patterns or holographic elements that make forgery harder.

  • Weight in grams or troy ounces
  • Maker logo and name
  • Serial number (usual from about 5 g)

Denominations and packaging

Minted bars are especially common in small weight units: 1 g, 2.5 g, 5 g, 10 g, 20 g, 1 troy ounce (31.1 g) and 50 g cover most of the private investor market. From about 5 g upward, the bars are often delivered sealed in a transparent plastic capsule — the so-called assay card or blister pack. This packaging protects against fingerprints and mechanical damage and includes a printed authenticity certificate from the refinery.

Note: opening the original packaging can reduce resale value, as dealers generally buy back sealed bars on better terms.

Melt value and premium

The intrinsic value of a minted bar is the current gold price or silver price multiplied by the fine weight. You can work out the melt value at any time with our melt value calculator. Above the melt value, buyers pay a premium (agio) that, in percentage terms, is markedly higher on small denominations (1 g) than on one-ounce bars. Authenticity testing

The precise dimensions of minted bars make authenticity checks easier: deviations in weight or thickness that point to tungsten cores or lead fills can be detected quickly with a fine scale and a calliper. Minted bars combine top dimensional accuracy, an attractive appearance and easy authenticity testing, which makes them especially suitable for private investors who want to move in and out flexibly in small weight units. The higher premium over cast bars is offset by better tradability and broader dealer acceptance.
