Kangaroo / Nugget
Also: Australian Gold Nugget, Australian Kangaroo, Nugget
The Kangaroo (officially the Australian Gold Nugget) is an Australian gold coin of 999.9/1000 fineness, struck by the Perth Mint since 1986, and one of the most widely traded bullion coins in the world.
The Kangaroo, known until 1989 as the Australian Gold Nugget, is one of the most significant bullion coins in the world. Issued by the Perth Mint, one of the oldest and most respected mints anywhere, this coin appeals to investors and collectors alike. The current gold price always forms the basis for its valuation.
History and how it got its name
The coin was introduced in 1986 as the Australian Gold Nugget. Its name honoured the legendary Australian gold nuggets of the 19th century, among them the "Welcome Stranger" (1869), the largest lump of gold ever found. From the 1989 mintage year the leaping kangaroo replaced the earlier nugget motif on the reverse, which is why the name "Kangaroo" caught on in everyday usage. The official name to this day is Australian Kangaroo Gold Coin.
Technical features at a glance
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Fineness | 999.9/1000 (fine gold, 24 carat) |
| Available sizes | 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, 1 kg |
| Face value (1 oz) | 100 AUD |
| Motif side | Annually changing kangaroo design |
| Value side | Portrait of King Charles III |
| Legal-tender status | Legal tender in Australia |
The annual design change is a deliberate feature: it makes every issue a potential collector's item while also guarding against forgery, since up-to-date security features are integrated each year. For the one-ounce coin, the melt value corresponds almost exactly to a troy ounce of gold.
Fineness and coin weight
Fine weight (1 oz) = 31.1035 g x 0.9999 ~ 31.1004 g of fine gold
Gross weight = 31.1035 g (exactly one troy ounce)
With a fineness of 999.9/1000, the Kangaroo surpasses other classic bullion coins such as the Krugerrand (916.7/1000). The gross weight equals exactly one troy ounce, which simplifies calculating the intrinsic value.
VAT and tax aspects
In Ireland the Kangaroo qualifies as investment gold and is exempt from VAT, provided it meets the EU VAT Directive criteria (fineness >= 900/1000, minted after 1800, legal-tender status). This exemption rests on the VAT Consolidation Act 2010 and EU Directive 2006/112/EC. A private individual's gain on a later sale is liable to Capital Gains Tax at 33% after the annual personal exemption of EUR 1,270, with no holding-period relief. This is, however, not tax or investment advice, and individual situations should be clarified with a tax adviser.
Investor and collector aspects
The Kangaroo unites two markets:
- Bullion investors value the globally recognised 999.9 fineness, the high liquidity and the competitive premium structure over the spot price.
- Collectors benefit from the annual design change: years with especially popular designs or limited issues can command premiums above the pure metal value.
Thanks to its range of denominations (from 1/20 oz to 1 kg), the coin suits both small savings plans and larger one-off investments.
Authenticity testing
The Perth Mint relies on layered security features. Buyers can verify coins with the coin weight checker and the authenticity checker. Checks include:
- Weight (exactly 31.1035 g for the 1-oz issue)
- Diameter (32.60 mm) and thickness (2.65 mm)
- Acoustic property (ping test)
- Density (Archimedes method, target value ~ 19.3 g/cm3)
Key takeaway
The Kangaroo is one of the few bullion coins that combines an annually changing design, the highest fineness (999.9) and global legal-tender status, uniting investor and collector value. As a product of the Perth Mint, it represents Australian minting craftsmanship at the international top tier.
