Home Storage
Also: self-storage, private storage, personal custody
Home storage means keeping precious metals in the owner's own physical custody — in a safe at home, a bank deposit box or another self-chosen location.
Anyone who buys physical gold or silver must sooner or later decide where to keep it. Home storage — keeping the metal in one's own care, with no intermediary — is the most direct form of ownership: the investor has unrestricted access to their property at any time, without depending on a third party.
Forms of home storage
Depending on the quantity, value and personal circumstances, several storage locations come into play:
| Form | Typical suitability | Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in home safe | bars up to about 5 kg, coin collections | burglary protection through weight and fixing |
| Freestanding / cabinet safe | small quantities, first-time investors | inexpensive, but easier to carry off |
| Bank deposit box | larger holdings | no access outside opening hours; consider bank risk |
| Hiding place without a safe | emergency reserve / small amounts | low protection, not insurable |
Advantages of home storage
- No counterparty risk: the metal is directly owned — no insolvency risk of a custodian, depository bank or ETF provider.
- Immediate access: available around the clock, with no lead time for withdrawals.
- No ongoing custody fees: unlike professional vault services or bonded warehouses, there are no recurring costs.
- Discreet holding: with a correct purchase (for example an over-the-counter cash transaction below the cash threshold), no reporting to third parties is required.
Risks and drawbacks
- Theft and burglary: without a high-quality safe, the theft risk is considerable.
- Fire and water damage: home or contents insurance often covers precious metals only up to fixed sub-limits (frequently EUR 1,000–2,000); a separate valuables add-on is advisable.
- Limited insurability: large holdings are hard to insure fully in a private capacity; specialist fine-art or valuables insurers are expensive.
- No return potential: the metal earns no interest or dividends — its value depends solely on the spot price.
- Reduced liquidity flexibility: to sell, the metal must be physically transported or presented to a dealer.
Insurance: what to watch for
Insured value = current fine-weight spot price × quantity + premium (agio)
You can check the current value of your holding at any time with the Gold Calculator or the Melt Value Calculator. Insurers often require proof of purchase (invoices, photos, bar serial numbers).
Home storage versus professional custody
Home storage is not the opposite of allocated gold in the broader sense — both establish direct ownership. The difference lies in where the metal is held:
- Home storage: the owner keeps custody themselves; no third party is involved.
- Allocated vault storage: a certified vault provider or bank holds metal assigned by name — with fees, but professional protection.
- Bonded warehouse: storage in a customs-free zone (Switzerland, Singapore) — relevant for larger holdings and cross-border flexibility.
Tax and legal notes for Ireland
For a private individual in Ireland, a gain on selling physical investment gold and silver is chargeable to Capital Gains Tax at 33 %, after the annual personal exemption of EUR 1,270. Note that Ireland grants no holding-period relief — there is no equivalent of the German rule under which a gain becomes tax-free after one year's holding. Investment gold is exempt from VAT (VAT Consolidation Act 2010, Schedule 1); for silver, platinum and palladium the standard Irish VAT rate of 23 % applies on purchase, though dealers may under certain conditions use the margin scheme, which lowers the effective tax. Large cash purchases of EUR 10,000 or more trigger anti-money-laundering obligations for dealers under the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2010. Note: this is neither tax nor investment advice — please consult a qualified adviser for your own situation. This is not tax advice.
In brief
Home storage offers maximum control and no counterparty risk, but it demands a well-thought-out security plan built from a safe, insurance and discreet handling. For small to medium holdings it is a practical and cost-efficient choice — for very large quantities it is worth comparing against professional custody solutions.
