Hallmark Loupe

A magnifier, typically 10x to 30x, used to inspect fineness marks, hallmarks and striking features on precious-metal coins and bars.
The hallmark loupe is the simplest and cheapest tool for the visual authentication of precious metals. It makes fineness marks and hallmarks on coins, bars and jewellery legible to the naked eye and lets you examine them for signs of forgery.
Magnification and designs
For precious-metal inspection, 10x magnification has become the established standard - the same scale that gemmologists and jewellers use worldwide for grading stones. Stronger loupes (20x to 30x) suit the finest striking detail but demand a steady hand and good light.

What the loupe reveals
With a hallmark loupe you can assess the following features:
- Fineness marks - for example "585", "750" or "999" on gold and silver; on genuine pieces the digits are sharp and evenly struck.
- Mint marks and striking symbols - logo details such as the Perth Mint's kangaroo or the Maple Leaf's maple leaf are crisply defined on originals.
- Edge lettering and security features - many bullion coins carry edge lettering or reeding that is often smeared or wrong on fakes.
- Surface texture - forgeries frequently use a base carrier material (for example tungsten) under a thin gold layer; the loupe can expose transitions, bubbles or casting seams that an original never shows.
Limits of the method
The hallmark loupe is a first visual check, not proof. High-quality forgeries with a correct stamp and a similar surface appearance will not be reliably caught this way. Complementary methods such as the coin weight check, the coin size check and the full authenticity check reveal deviations that stay invisible to the eye. For high-value items an X-ray fluorescence analysis at a specialist dealer is advisable.
