A loupe with typically 10- to 30-times magnification, used to examine fineness stamps, hallmarks and die details on precious metal coins and bars.
The hallmark loupe is the simplest and most affordable tool for the optical authentication of precious metals. It allows fineness stamps and hallmarks on coins, bars and jewellery to be read with the naked eye and examined for signs of forgery.
Magnification and Designs
For precious metal examination, 10-times magnification (10×) has become the established standard – the same scale used by gemmologists and jewellers worldwide for stone grading. Stronger loupes (20× to 30×) are suitable for the finest die details but require a steady hand and good lighting.

What the Loupe Reveals
The hallmark loupe allows the following features to be assessed:
- Fineness stamps – e.g. "585", "750" or "999" on gold and silver; on genuine pieces the digits are sharply and evenly struck.
- Mint marks and die details – logo details such as the Perth Mint kangaroo or the Maple Leaf die are razor-sharp on originals.
- Edge lettering and security features – many bullion coins carry circumferential edge lettering or milling that is often blurred or defective on fakes.
- Surface texture – forgeries often consist of a base metal core (e.g. tungsten) with a thin gold coating; the loupe can reveal transitions, bubbles or casting seams that are absent on originals.
Limitations of the Method
The hallmark loupe is a first visual inspection, not proof. High-quality forgeries with a correct stamp and similar surface appearance are not reliably detected by this means. Complementary methods such as coin weight verification, coin dimensions verification and the authenticity check reveal discrepancies that remain invisible optically. For high-value items, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis by a specialist dealer is recommended.
