Step-by-Step Procedure
- Calibrate the scale: Use a precision scale with a resolution of at least 0.001 g (1 mg) and calibrate it against a certified calibration weight. Affordable precision scales for home use are available from around £15–25 and are perfectly adequate for this test.
- Keep the coin dry and clean: Residues from fingerprints, grease, or moisture can minimally distort the measurement. Briefly handle the coin with a clean cloth or leather pad.
- Weigh: Place the coin centrally on the weighing surface and read the value. Ideally repeat two to three times to rule out measurement deviations.
- Compare: Check the measured weight against the official target weight. If the deviation falls within the manufacturer's tolerance (typically ± 0.05 g for modern bullion coins), the weight criterion is met.
- Interpret the result: A passed weight test is a necessary but not sufficient criterion of authenticity. Professional counterfeiters know the target weights and produce forgeries accordingly (e.g. with a tungsten core).
Limitations and the Tungsten Problem
The greatest weakness of a pure weight test is the tungsten forgery: tungsten has a density of 19.30 g/cm³, almost identical to gold (19.32 g/cm³). A coin with a tungsten core and a thin gold coating can weigh exactly the same as a genuine coin, thereby passing the weight test, yet be worthless.
The weight test should therefore always be combined with:
- the coin dimensions check (diameter and thickness)
- the density test by Archimedes' principle (reliably exposes tungsten forgeries)
- the magnet test (precious metals are not ferromagnetic)
- the ping test for silver coins
- where suspected: X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF)

Tolerances and Legal Regulations
State mints are legally obliged to produce their coins within tight manufacturing tolerances. These tolerance limits – known as "remedy" – vary depending on the coin type and issue. The following guideline values generally apply to modern bullion coins:
