Royal Canadian Mint

Also: RCM, Canadian Mint, Monnaie royale canadienne

The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is Canada's state mint and one of the most prestigious precious metal institutions in the world, renowned for the Maple Leaf and its highest purity standards.

The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is one of the most important state mints in the world. Founded in 1908 in Ottawa, it strikes both Canadian circulation coinage and internationally sought-after bullion coins in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. As a so-called Crown Corporation, it falls under the Canadian government but operates commercially as an independent entity.

History and Structure

Originally opened as a branch of the British Royal Mint, the RCM gained full independence in 1931. Today it operates two facilities:

  • Ottawa (headquarters): Production of bullion coins, collector coins, and gold bars for the international market
  • Winnipeg (Manitoba): Mass production of Canadian circulation coins and coin minting on behalf of other states

The RCM is listed on the LBMA Good Delivery List, which certifies its gold bars and products as eligible for exchange trading in the professional interbank market.

The Maple Leaf – The RCM's Flagship Product

The RCM's most famous product is the Canadian Maple Leaf, produced since 1979 (gold) and 1988 (silver). When it was introduced, the Gold Maple Leaf was the world's first bullion coin with a fineness of 999.9/1000 — a standard that remains a benchmark to this day.

Metal Introduced Fineness Face value (CAD) Common size
Gold 1979 999.9 ‰ 50 1 oz
Silver 1988 999.9 ‰ 5 1 oz
Platinum 1988 999.5 ‰ 50 1 oz
Palladium 2005 999.5 ‰ 50 1 oz

The statutory face value in Canadian dollars is symbolic; the actual market value is based on the prevailing gold price or silver price plus the market-standard premium.

Security Features and Quality Standards

The RCM is known for ongoing innovations in coin protection. Modern Maple Leaf coins carry multiple layers of authenticity features:

  1. Radial Lines – Finely milled lines in the background create a characteristic light reflection effect
  2. Micro-Engraved Maple Leaf – A tiny, laser-engraved maple leaf with year number on the reverse side (from 2013)
  3. Bullion DNA – Digital registration of each coin for later verification by dealers (from 2014)

These measures were introduced in response to increasing tungsten forgeries and coating imitations. Coin authenticity checking helps verify original parameters (weight, diameter, thickness).

Trading Relevance and Tax Aspects

Maple Leaf coins in gold qualify in Germany as investment gold within the meaning of the EU VAT Directive (§ 25c UStG) and are therefore exempt from VAT. Silver Maple Leaf coins are subject to VAT; in practice, many dealers apply the margin scheme under § 25a UStG, which significantly reduces the effective tax burden. On resale after a holding period of more than twelve months, the speculative holding period under § 23 EStG applies — gains are then tax-free. This note is not a substitute for tax or investment advice; a tax adviser should be consulted in individual cases.

The high international liquidity of the Maple Leaf series makes it widely accepted by dealers worldwide; buying prices are generally close to the spot price.

In Brief

The Royal Canadian Mint stands for state-guaranteed purity at the highest level, sophisticated security technology, and decades of reliability. The Maple Leaf is one of the most widely traded bullion coins in the world and a standard holding in the precious metal portfolios of both private and institutional investors.
