Royal Mint (UK)

Also: The Royal Mint, TRMUK, British Mint

The Royal Mint is the national mint of the United Kingdom and one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the world, renowned for bullion coins such as the Britannia and the Sovereign.

The Royal Mint (officially The Royal Mint Ltd.) is the national mint of the United Kingdom and one of the oldest continuously operating institutions in the world. Its roots reach back to the late 9th century; under King Alfred the Great the first royal mints were established in London. Since 1968 its headquarters have been in Llantrisant, Wales. The Royal Mint strikes not only the entirety of Britain's circulating currency but is internationally renowned above all for its high-purity bullion coins, sought after by investors and collectors worldwide.

History and standing

For more than a thousand years the Royal Mint was housed in the Tower of London – a fact that lends it a unique historical aura to this day. In 1975 it became an independent agency (Trading Fund), and in 2010 it was converted into a limited company (Royal Mint Ltd.) whose shares are held entirely by the British state. The institution holds accreditation as an LBMA Good Delivery Refiner for gold and silver, making its bars and coins tradeable on the international wholesale market without further assay (see LBMA Good Delivery).

The Sovereign is one of the best-known investment coins from the United Kingdom: as a gold coin with a 22-carat fineness (916 gold) and a fine weight of 7.3224 g, it offers an alternative to full troy ounces and is frequently traded in denominations of 1, ½, ¼ and ⅛ Sovereign.

Authenticity testing and quality features

Royal Mint coins have precisely documented weight and size tolerances that allow simple mechanical checks. The current gold price is available at /uk/gold-price/; the material value of a Britannia coin can be worked out quickly with the melt-value calculator.

Key checking features at a glance:

  1. Weight: deviation for the Sovereign (7.9881 g) at most ±0.005 g; for the 1 oz Gold Britannia at most ±0.01 troy oz.
  2. Diameter: Gold Britannia 1 oz = 32.69 mm; Sovereign = 22.05 mm.
  3. Edge striking: Britannia series carry a fine edge inscription or reeded edges as anti-counterfeit protection.
  4. Security features from 2021: newer Britannia issues contain a laser-struck micro-pattern and a hologram-like latent image.

The diameter and weight of a coin in hand can be verified online with the coin weight checker and the coin size checker.

Tax treatment (not tax advice)

Under UK law, gold Britannia and Sovereign coins are exempt from VAT as investment gold (HMRC; fineness ≥ 995‰, in line with EU Directive 2006/112/EC). Silver Britannia coins are subject to the standard 20% VAT rate; dealers may in some cases apply the margin scheme. A particular advantage of these coins: as UK legal-tender coins from The Royal Mint, the Sovereign, Britannia, Lunar and Queen's Beasts are exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT) with unlimited gains. Non-legal-tender coins and gold bars, by contrast, are subject to CGT on gains above the annual exempt amount. There is no German-style one-year speculation period. This is not tax or investment advice – please consult a professional.

The Royal Mint in comparison

Alongside the Perth Mint, the Austrian Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint, the Royal Mint ranks among the world's most respected state mints. One key difference: whereas the Perth Mint also offers physically backed storage accounts, the Royal Mint concentrates primarily on physical coins and bars and, in recent years, on its own online trading platform (Royal Mint Bullion).

In brief

The Royal Mint combines over a thousand years of coinage history with state-of-the-art security standards. Its bullion coins – above all the Britannia and Sovereign – are regarded as reliable, globally liquid investment gold products with clearly defined finenesses and officially tested tolerances.
