The ice melt test is one of the simplest and most effective home checks for silver. It is based on a unique physical property: at 429 W/(m·K), silver has the highest thermal conductivity of any metal. This means that on a genuine silver coin or a genuine silver bar, an ice cube draws away the warmth of your hand so efficiently that it visibly melts faster than on any other material.
How to perform the test
- Hold the silver item (coin or bar) at room temperature in your hand so that it absorbs body heat.
- Carefully place an ordinary ice cube on the surface.
- Observe: on genuine silver the ice cube begins to melt immediately and visibly – faster than on a comparable surface of glass, steel or copper.
The whole test takes only a few seconds. A stopwatch is not needed; the effect is obvious.

Fakes are often made of lead, steel, tungsten or alloys with much lower thermal conductivity. Heat transfer from the object to the ice cube is noticeably slower with these materials – melting begins with a delay or proceeds sluggishly.
Limits and complementary tests
The ice melt test has one key limitation: copper conducts heat almost as well as silver (401 vs. 429 W/(m·K)). A silver-plated copper coin passes the test easily. The test therefore mainly rules out low-grade fakes made of lead, tin or steel – but not high-quality silver plating over a copper base.
For reliable results, the ice melt test should be combined with further methods:
- Density measurement (Archimedes' principle): silver has a density of 10.49 g/cm³ – considerably higher than most substitute metals.
- Magnet test: silver is diamagnetic and is not attracted by a strong magnet.
- Ping test: a genuine silver coin gives off a bright, long-lasting tone when lightly struck.
- Coin Weight Checker and Coin Size Checker: deviations from the nominal dimensions indicate fakes.
For final certainty, a professional X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) or testing by a recognised refinery is recommended.
In brief
The ice melt test is a quick, free first check that reliably exposes crude fakes made from poor conductors – but it does not replace a fineness test and fails with silver-plated copper items. As part of a multi-stage authenticity check, it is nonetheless a valuable tool for every silver investor.
