Home Storage
Also: self-storage, private storage, personal storage
Home storage refers to the physical safekeeping of precious metals by the owner themselves — in a safe at home, in a bank safe-deposit box or at another self-chosen location.
Anyone who buys physical gold or silver must sooner or later decide where the metal is to be kept. Home storage — personal safekeeping without an intermediary service provider — is the most direct form of ownership: the investor has unrestricted access to their property at any time, without depending on third parties.
Forms of home storage
Depending on quantity, value and personal circumstances, various storage locations come into consideration:
| Form | Typical suitability | Special feature |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in home safe | Bars up to approx. 5 kg, coin collections | Burglary protection through weight and fixing |
| Free-standing / cabinet safe | Small quantities, first-time investors | Inexpensive, but easier to carry off |
| Bank safe-deposit box | Larger holdings | No access outside opening hours; consider bank risk |
| Hiding place without a safe | Emergency reserve / small amounts | Low level of protection, not insurable |
Advantages of home storage
- No counterparty risk: the metal is direct property — no insolvency risk of a custodian, depositary bank or ETF provider.
- Immediate access: available around the clock, no lead time for withdrawals.
- No ongoing storage fees: unlike professional vaulting services or bonded warehouses, no recurring costs arise.
- Discreet holding: with a correct purchase (e.g. an over-the-counter cash deal below reporting thresholds), no disclosure obligation towards third parties is required.
Risks and disadvantages
- Theft and burglary: without a high-quality safe, the risk of theft is considerable.
- Fire and water damage: buildings or contents insurance often covers precious metals only up to fixed sub-limits (frequently a few thousand pounds); separate valuables cover is advisable.
- Limited insurability: high holdings are barely fully insurable privately; specialist fine-art insurers or specialised providers are expensive.
- No income opportunity: the metal earns no interest or dividends — the value depends solely on the spot price.
- Lack of liquidity flexibility: to sell, the metal must be physically transported or presented to a dealer.
Insurance: what to look out for
Insured value = current fine-weight spot price × quantity + premium (agio)
You can determine the current value of your holdings at any time with the gold calculator or the melt value calculator. Insurers often require proof of purchase (invoices, photos, bar serial numbers).
Home storage vs. professional custody
Home storage is not the opposite of allocated gold in the broader sense — both forms establish direct ownership. The difference lies in the place of safekeeping:
- Home storage: the owner keeps it themselves, no third party is involved.
- Allocated custody: a certified vaulting provider or bank keeps metal specifically assigned by name — with fees, but professional protection.
- Bonded warehouse: storage in a customs-free zone (e.g. Switzerland, Singapore) — relevant for larger holdings and cross-border flexibility.
Tax and legal notes (United Kingdom)
Gains from the sale of physical investment gold and silver by private individuals are subject to Capital Gains Tax (CGT). UK legal-tender coins from The Royal Mint — such as the Sovereign and Britannia — are CGT-exempt with unlimited gains, whereas non-legal-tender coins and bars are subject to CGT on gains above the annual exempt amount (gain = disposal proceeds − acquisition cost). There is no German-style one-year speculation period. Investment gold is exempt from VAT (HMRC; in line with Directive 2006/112/EC); for silver, platinum and palladium the standard 20% VAT applies on purchase — though dealers can, under certain conditions, apply the VAT margin scheme, which reduces the effective tax rate. Note: this is not tax or investment advice — for individual questions please consult an accountant.
In brief
Home storage offers maximum control and no counterparty risk, but demands a well-considered security concept combining a safe, insurance and discreet handling. For small to medium holdings it is a practical and cost-efficient choice — for very large quantities it is worth comparing professional custody solutions.
