A silver bar is a standardized semi-finished product made from fine silver (at least 999/1000) that serves as a physical investment form for private investors and institutional investors.
A silver bar is the purest and most direct form of holding physical silver. It consists of pressed or cast fine silver with a minimum fineness of 999/1000 (three nines) and always bears the manufacturer's stamp, weight, and fineness. As an investment product, it combines the intrinsic value of the metal with easy storability and comparatively low manufacturing costs compared to coins.
Manufacturing process: cast vs. minted
Silver bars are produced in two fundamentally different ways, which differ in appearance, price, and quality:

Large cast bars, known as LBMA Good Delivery Bars, weigh between 750 and 1,100 fine ounces (approximately 23–34 kg) and are traded exclusively in the interbank market and by central banks. For private investors, bars from 1 ounce to 5 kilograms are the usual weight range.
Fineness and markings
Standard investment bars have a fineness of .999 (three nines) or .9999 (four nines). The stamp on every bar contains at minimum:
- Manufacturer (Heraeus, Umicore, PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus, Perth Mint, and others)
- Weight in grams or fine ounces
- Fineness as a decimal number (e.g. "999" or "Fine Silver 999.9")
- Serial number for bars from approximately 100 g upwards (enables authenticity verification with the manufacturer)
Some manufacturers supply smaller bars in a sealed assay certificate blister (also called a certificate bar). Opening the blister reduces the resale value, as authenticity must then be re-verified.
Price calculation: spot price plus premium
The purchase price of a silver bar consists of the current silver spot price and the premium (agio), which covers manufacturing, storage, and distribution costs as well as the dealer's margin. The current material value can be determined using the melt value calculator.
Purchase price = (Weight in fine ounces × Spot price) + Premium
Example: 1 kg = 32.15 oz t → 32.15 × Spot price + Premium (approx. 3–6%)
The premium is proportionally higher for smaller bars (1-oz bars: 5–10%) and decreases for larger bars (1-kg bars: 3–5%), because the unit costs of production are spread over more metal. The silver calculator allows direct comparison of different weight categories.
Tax considerations in Germany
Silver bars are subject in Germany – unlike investment gold – to VAT at 19% (standard rate). Margin scheme taxation (§ 25a UStG) by dealers can reduce the effective tax burden, but is subject to conditions. This creates a structural premium for private investors compared to gold.
On sale, the speculative holding period of one year under § 23 EStG applies: gains from the sale of silver bars are income tax-free after a holding period of more than twelve months (provided the annual allowance of EUR 1,000 for private disposal transactions is not exceeded). Common denominations at a glance
- 1 fine ounce (31.1 g) – most liquid size, high resaleability
- 100 g – popular entry point, good premium-to-weight ratio

- 1 kg – standard size for frequent buyers, lowest premium ratio for bars
- 5 kg / 15 kg – institutional sizes, limited secondary market
Storage and authenticity testing
Silver tarnishes (reacts with sulfur compounds in the air), which does not reduce material value but affects appearance. Low-oxygen storage in foil bags or OPP sleeves is recommended, ideally in a safe or bank safe-deposit box.
Several methods are suitable for authenticity testing:
- Density determination by Archimedes principle (silver: 10.49 g/cm³)
- Sigma Metalytics or comparable devices (contactless measurement)
- Magnet test: Silver is not magnetic (diamagnetic); a strong neodymium magnet moved past a silver bar is noticeably slowed by eddy currents (Lenz's law)
- Ping test: A genuine silver bar produces a clear, long-lasting tone when struck
