South Africa's Bushveld Igneous Complex is the largest known platinum deposit in the world. Platinum is mined there predominantly as a by-product of nickel and copper extraction, which significantly delays the supply response to price changes and sets the market structure apart from other precious metals.
Chemical and Physical Properties

Autocatalysts are the most important single segment: platinum oxidises carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons in diesel exhaust gases into CO₂ and water. The diesel scandal from 2015 onwards and the trend towards petrol cars (which rely more heavily on palladium) noticeably reduced platinum demand from this segment. In the medium term, however, the hydrogen economy — platinum is a key catalyst in fuel cells and electrolysers — could generate new demand impulses.

Tax Specifics (not tax or investment advice)
Unlike investment gold, which is exempt from VAT in the EU, no such exemption applies to platinum. In Germany, platinum bars are subject to the standard 19 % VAT rate. For imported platinum coins, dealers frequently apply the margin scheme — similar to silver coins — so that only the trade margin is taxed; VAT nevertheless remains a cost factor. This raises the barrier to entry compared with gold considerably.
As with other physical precious metals, the one-year speculative holding period rule applies to sales: if the metal is held for more than one year, any gain on disposal is tax-free; within that period a tax-free allowance of €1,000 per year applies (prior to 2023: €600).
