Panda
Also: Chinese Panda, China Panda, Gold Panda, Silver Panda
The Gold Panda and Silver Panda are official bullion coins of the People\'s Republic of China, issued annually since 1982 (gold) and 1983 (silver) by the China Gold Coin Corporation, distinguished from other bullion coins by their annually changing giant panda motif.
The Panda is one of the world's most recognised bullion coins and the flagship of Chinese precious metal minting. Since 1982, the China Gold Coin Corporation (CGCC), acting on behalf of the People's Bank of China, has issued new editions every year. What makes the Panda equally popular among collectors and investors is a unique characteristic: the giant panda motif on the obverse changes every year — a distinguishing feature that is virtually unrivalled among major bullion coins. The current gold price and silver price determine the metal value; the collectible potential can push the premium even higher.
Issue Versions and Denominations
Pandas are struck in gold and silver; rare platinum and palladium issues as well as gold-plated commemorative strikes also exist.
| Variant | Weight (standard series) | Fineness | Face Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Panda | 1 g / 3 g / 8 g / 15 g / 30 g | 999.9 ‰ | 10 / 15 / 50 / 100 / 500 Yuan |
| Silver Panda | 30 g | 999 ‰ | 10 Yuan |
| Platinum Panda (rare) | 1/10 oz / 1 oz | 999 ‰ | 100 / 500 Yuan |
Important change in 2016: Until 2015 inclusive, Gold Pandas were issued in troy ounce denominations (1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz). From 2016 onwards, the switch was made to metric gram weights. The 30 g coin is roughly equivalent to a troy ounce (31.1 g) but is not identical — a fact to bear in mind when using the coin weight checker.
Motif Design
- Reverse: A newly designed giant panda motif every year — sometimes a single bear eating bamboo, sometimes a mother with a cub. The year and weight are inscribed here.
- Obverse (Avers): The Temple of Heaven in Beijing, the inscription "中华人民共和国" (People's Republic of China), plus the face value and year.
- Exception 2001: The motif was not changed from 2000 in this year — this edition is regarded as a special item among collectors.
Premium and Collector Value
The fineness of 999.9 ‰ (gold) matches the standard of other leading bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Vienna Philharmonic. The premium (agio) on Pandas is, however, typically somewhat higher than on comparable coins, as the annual motif change generates additional collector demand. Older issues with particularly popular motifs can trade significantly above their pure melt value.
Metal Value (Gold Panda 30 g) = 30 g × (gold price per gram)
Dealer Price = Metal Value + Premium (Agio)
You can quickly calculate the current melt value of your Panda coin using the melt value calculator.
Tax Classification
Gold Pandas with a fineness of at least 995/1000 and a weight of at least 1 g fall under the VAT exemption for investment gold in the EU. Silver Pandas, on the other hand, are subject to the standard VAT rate. If sold at a profit, the speculative holding period of twelve months may be relevant. This is not tax or investment advice — please consult a qualified professional.
Authenticity Verification
Because Pandas are traded internationally on a large scale, counterfeits do circulate. Reliable testing methods:
- Weight and diameter — check with the coin weight checker and coin dimensions checker.
- Ping test: Genuine gold coins produce a clear, sustained ring.
- Density (Archimedes principle): Gold has a density of approx. 19.3 g/cm³ — tungsten cores measure 19.25 g/cm³, so additional ultrasound or X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) is recommended.
- Purchase exclusively from reputable dealers with an authenticity certificate (blister/assay card).
Key Takeaway
The Panda combines a high purity standard (999.9 ‰ gold) with an annually changing motif, making it attractive both as a bullion coin at metal value and as a collectible. Keeping an eye on the current gold price and knowing the premium allows you to quickly calculate the fair entry price yourself.
