Home Storage
Also: Self-storage, Private storage, Personal storage
Home storage refers to the physical safekeeping of precious metals by the owner themselves — in a home safe, a bank safe deposit box or another self-chosen location.
Anyone who buys physical gold or silver must sooner or later decide where to store the metal. Home storage — meaning personal safekeeping without an intermediary service provider — is the most direct form of ownership: the investor has unrestricted access to their property at all times, without depending on third parties.
Forms of Home Storage
Depending on the quantity, value and personal situation, various storage locations may be considered:
| Form | Typical suitability | Special feature |
|---|---|---|
| Home safe (wall-mounted) | Bars up to approx. 5 kg, coin collections | Burglar protection through weight and mounting |
| Floor safe / cabinet safe | Small quantities, first-time investors | Inexpensive, but easier to transport |
| Bank safe deposit box | Larger holdings | No access outside opening hours; note bank risk |
| Hiding place without safe | Emergency reserve / very small amounts | Low level of protection, not insurable |
Advantages of Home Storage
- No counterparty risk: The metal is direct property — no insolvency risk of a custodian, depositary bank or ETF provider.
- Immediate access: Available around the clock, no lead time for withdrawals.
- No ongoing custody fees: Unlike professional vault services or bonded warehouses, no regular costs arise.
- Discrete holding: With correct purchasing (e.g. in an over-the-counter cash transaction below the cash limit), no reporting obligation to third parties is required.
Risks and Disadvantages
- Theft and burglary: Without a high-quality safe, the risk of theft is considerable.
- Fire and water damage: Home contents or household insurance policies often only cover precious metals up to specified sub-limits (frequently £1,000–£2,000); a separate valuables supplementary insurance policy is recommended.
- Limited insurability: Large holdings are barely fully insurable privately; specialist fine art insurers or specialist providers are expensive.
- No return potential: The metal generates no interest or dividends — value depends solely on the spot price.
- Lack of liquidity flexibility: When selling, the metal must be physically transported or presented to a dealer.
Insurance: What to Look Out For?
Insurance value = Current fine weight spot price × quantity + premium (agio)
The current value of your holdings can be calculated at any time using the gold calculator or the melt value calculator. Insurers often require proof of purchase (invoices, photographs, bar serial numbers).
Home Storage vs. Professional Custody
Home storage is not the opposite of allocated gold in the broader sense — both forms establish direct ownership. The difference lies in the storage location:
- Home storage: Owner stores personally, no third party is involved.
- Allocated deposit storage: Certified vault service provider or bank stores metal allocated by name — with fees, but professional protection.
- Bonded warehouse: Storage in a duty-free area (e.g. Switzerland, Singapore) — relevant for larger holdings and cross-border flexibility.
Tax and Legal Notes
Gains from the sale of physical investment gold and silver by private individuals are taxable under § 23 EStG if less than one year elapses between purchase and sale (so-called speculative holding period). After the one-year period, gains are tax-free; within the period, an allowance of £1,000 applies (§ 23 para. 3 sentence 5 EStG). Investment gold is exempt from VAT (§ 25c UStG); for silver, platinum and palladium, the regular rate of 19% VAT applies on purchase — however, dealers may under certain conditions apply margin scheme taxation (§ 25a UStG), which reduces the effective tax rate. Note: This is not tax or investment advice — for individual questions please consult a tax advisor.
In Brief
Home storage offers maximum control and no counterparty risk, but requires a well-thought-out security concept comprising a safe, insurance and discreet handling. For small to medium holdings it is a practical and cost-efficient choice — for very large quantities it is worth comparing with professional custody solutions.
