Gold plating refers to the application of a thin layer of gold onto a base of non-precious or precious metal, glass, or ceramic in order to improve appearance, corrosion protection, or electrical properties.
Gold plating is not a solid gold object, but a composite layer structure: a very thin layer of gold is applied to a substrate — typically brass, copper, sterling silver, or stainless steel. The result looks like gold, but contains only a fraction of the precious metal. Electroplating (galvanic gold plating) is today the most widely used process: the workpiece is immersed as a cathode in a gold-containing electrolyte bath; direct current causes gold ions to deposit on the surface. The layer thickness is precisely controllable and for fashion jewellery is often only 0.5 µm — too little to have any meaningful impact on the price assessment.
The historical fire gilding process mixed gold with mercury to form an amalgam, which was applied and then heated; the mercury evaporated and the gold adhered. This process is banned today due to its toxicity and is only permitted in restoration work under strict protective measures.
Gold Plating vs. Related Terms
- Vermeil: Gold plating on sterling silver (≥ 925) with at least 2.5 µm of gold; a legally protected term in France and the USA.
- Gold-Filled / Double: Mechanically rolled-on gold layer (≥ 10 µm), more durable and longer-lasting than electroplated coatings.
- Rhodium Plating: An analogous process using rhodium instead of gold, common in white gold jewellery to enhance brightness.
Labelling and Legal Requirements
In the EU, gold-plated items must not be described as "gold". Permissible descriptions include "gold-plated", "gold-plated" (in the relevant language), or the layer thickness in micrometres. If a fineness hallmark is absent, it is clear: this is not a solid precious metal product.
