Vreneli
Also: Swiss Gold Vreneli, Helvetia coin, Vreneli gold coin
The Vreneli is a Swiss gold coin with a fineness of 900/1000 (21.6 carat), minted between 1897 and 1949 and traded today as a classic bullion coin.
The Vreneli is regarded as the best-known Swiss gold coin and is closely bound up with the country's history. The name derives from "Verena" – the first name of the female allegory of Helvetia depicted on the obverse, who was quickly referred to in the vernacular as "Vreni" or "Vreneli". The coin was first put into circulation in 1897 and minted regularly until 1949; individual vintages were struck in very small quantities and are numismatically valuable today. As a means of payment the Vreneli is no longer in circulation, but it is widely traded on the precious metals market and is regarded as a classic bullion coin in Europe.
Technical Data and Denominations
The Vreneli appeared in three denominations, of which the 20-franc piece is by far the most widespread and most liquid variant:
| Denomination | Gross weight | Fine weight | Diameter | Minting years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 francs | 3.226 g | 2.903 g gold | 19.0 mm | 1911–1922 |
| 20 francs | 6.452 g | 5.806 g gold | 21.0 mm | 1897–1949 |
| 100 francs | 32.258 g | 29.032 g gold | 35.0 mm | 1925 (rare) |
All three denominations share the same fineness of 900/1000 (21.6 carat). By comparison: the British Sovereign and the South African Krugerrand are made of so-called crown gold (22 carat, 916.7/1000) and are thus slightly richer in fine gold than the Vreneli. The copper content of 100/1000 increases abrasion resistance and gives the coin the warm red-gold tone typical of this alloy.
Calculating the Melt Value
The material value of a 20-franc Vreneli results directly from the current gold price and the fine weight:
Melt value = gold price (€/g) × 5.806 g
At a gold price of €85/g, the melt value amounts, for example, to around €494. The actual market offer is usually above this, since renown and trading liquidity justify a premium. You can quickly determine the current melt value with the melt value calculator.
Market Position and Liquidity
Alongside the Krugerrand, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Maple Leaf, the Vreneli is among the best-known investment coins in Europe. Special features:
- High liquidity: Banks, coin dealers and precious metals dealers in Switzerland and across Europe accept the Vreneli at any time.
- Tax classification (Malta): As investment gold the Vreneli is VAT-exempt in Malta under the EU VAT Directive 2006/112/EC (gold coins of at least 900‰ fineness meeting the qualifying criteria). Note: this is not tax advice – please consult a qualified adviser for your individual situation.
- Capital gains (Malta): Malta levies no capital gains tax on private disposals of movable assets such as gold coins; Maltese CGT applies only to specific assets defined by law (notably immovable property, securities and business interests). There is no holding-period or speculation-period requirement. Again: no investment or tax advice. Sources: cfr.gov.mt, legislation.mt, eur-lex.europa.eu.
- Vintage differences: Rare vintages (e.g. 100-franc pieces from 1925 or certain 10-franc vintages) achieve at times considerable numismatic premiums; for investors the widespread 20-franc piece is primarily relevant.
Authenticity Check
Since the Vreneli has a long minting history and was in circulation in large numbers, counterfeits exist. Important verification features:
- Weight: The 20-franc piece must weigh exactly 6.452 g. Deviations of more than 0.05 g are suspicious.
- Diameter and thickness: 21.0 mm diameter, 1.25 mm thickness – testable with good callipers.
- Ping test: Genuine gold rings dampened and briefly when tapped; tungsten or lead sound different.
- Magnet test: Gold is not magnetic – if a magnet attracts the coin, it is not a gold coin.
- Density measurement: Gold has a density of approx. 19.32 g/cm³; an Archimedes measurement reveals counterfeits with a tungsten core.

In Brief
The Vreneli is one of the most tradition-rich European gold coins: with 5.806 g of fine gold, high trading liquidity and VAT exemption, it is a solid core position for investors who prefer physical gold. The common 20-franc piece is easy to verify and can be sold without difficulty in many places.
