Sovereign

The Sovereign is one of the most famous and historically significant gold coins in the world. With its characteristic depiction of Saint George fighting the dragon – designed in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci – it has outlasted kings, wars and currency systems for over two centuries. Today it is minted by the Royal Mint in Wales and ranks among the most traded bullion coins in the world.

History and Origin

The first modern Sovereign was introduced in 1817 following Britain's currency reform, replacing older guinea pieces. In the gold standard era of the 19th century it was de facto the leading currency of the British Empire, circulating throughout much of the Commonwealth and in international trade. During both World Wars minting was restricted or interrupted, but was always resumed. Today it appears as an annual bullion coin as well as in proof finish (Proof / Proof Finish).

Technical Data and Denominations

The classic Sovereign is made of Crown Gold – a gold-copper alloy with 916.7‰ fineness (equivalent to 22 carat). The added copper gives the coin its characteristically warm red-gold colour and increases its mechanical durability compared with pure fine gold.

The fine weight of the standard Sovereign can also be expressed as a fraction of the troy ounce:

Premium and Market Valuation

Sovereigns are typically traded with a premium (agio) over the pure metal value. The size of the premium varies depending on:

• Year and mint – coins from Ottawa, Melbourne, Sydney or Bombay achieve higher prices among collectors
• Condition – circulated pieces (VF/EF) versus uncirculated (BU) versus proof
• Current year – new strikes from the Royal Mint tend to have standardised premiums
• Market demand – when gold demand is high, the Sovereign premium rises too

Tax Classification (not tax advice – information only)

In Malta, investment gold is exempt from VAT under EU Directive 2006/112/EC and Maltese VAT legislation, provided the coins have a fineness of at least 900‰, were minted after 1800, are or have been legal tender in the country of origin and are normally sold at a price not exceeding the open-market value of the gold. The Sovereign fulfils these criteria and is therefore VAT-exempt when acquired as investment gold. Malta levies no capital gains tax on private disposals of movable assets such as gold coins – Maltese CGT applies only to specific categories (immovable property, securities, business interests). Authenticity Testing

Because of their worldwide distribution, Sovereigns have historically been frequently counterfeited. Reliable testing methods:

1. Weight and dimensions – target: 7.9881 g / 22.05 mm Ø / 1.52 mm thickness (tolerance < 0.05 g)
2. Ping test – a genuine Sovereign gives a bright, sustained ring when carefully tapped
3. Magnet test – gold and copper are non-magnetic; attraction indicates a fake
4. Density check – Crown Gold has a density of approximately 17.6 g/cm³
5. Hallmark check – Pistrucci signature "BP" on the George image, edge inscription "DECUS ET TUTAMEN"
