Proof denotes the highest quality grade for coin minting, recognisable by mirror-smooth fields and frosted, matte motifs.
Proof is the most demanding manufacturing grade in coinage. While ordinary bullion coins are struck in a mass process, a proof coin goes through an elaborate individual process: the striking die is mirror-polished, the coin blank (planchet) is brushed and cleaned, and the strike is carried out with several slow blows under high pressure. The result is the characteristic contrast between a mirror-smooth background field and a matte-satin motif - also called the frosted effect.
Manufacturing process
The production sequence for a proof coin typically comprises:
- Die polishing - high-gloss polishing of the striking dies by diamond lapping.
- Blank preparation - individual cleaning and brushing of each coin blank.
- Multiple strikes - at least two, often three to four strikes for razor-sharp detail.
- Handling with gloves - handling only with cotton gloves to avoid fingerprints.
- Individual encapsulation - inserting into a clear capsule directly at the press.

Collector value and premium
Proof coins are issued in limited mintages by major mints such as the Perth Mint, the Austrian Mint or the Royal Mint. The premium (agio) over the pure metal value ranges, depending on coin and vintage, from 20 % to well over 100 %. The resale value depends heavily on mintage, condition, completeness of the original packaging and numismatic demand - and can deviate considerably from the current gold price.
Important: since proof coins are primarily collectors' items, their price does not necessarily follow the spot market price for gold or silver. The coin authenticity check can help to verify weight and dimensions.
