Royal Canadian Mint
Also: RCM, Canadian Mint, Monnaie royale canadienne
The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is Canada's state mint and one of the most renowned precious-metal institutions in the world, known for the Maple Leaf and for the highest purity standards.
The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) ranks among the most important state mints in the world. Founded in 1908 in Ottawa, it strikes both Canadian circulation currency and internationally sought-after bullion coins in gold, silver, platinum and palladium. As a so-called Crown Corporation, it is under the Canadian state but operates independently in commercial terms.
History and structure
Originally opened as a branch of the British Royal Mint, the RCM gained full independence in 1931. Today it operates two sites:
- Ottawa (headquarters): production of bullion coins, collector coins and gold bars for the international market
- Winnipeg (Manitoba): mass production of Canadian circulation coins as well as coinage on behalf of other states
The RCM is listed on the LBMA Good Delivery List, which designates its gold bars and products as exchange-tradable in the professional interbank market.
The Maple Leaf – flagship of the RCM
The best-known product of the RCM is the Canadian Maple Leaf, which has been produced since 1979 (gold) and 1988 (silver). When introduced, the gold Maple Leaf was the first bullion coin worldwide with a fineness of 999.9/1000 – a standard that still sets the benchmark today.
| Metal | Introduction | Fineness | Face value (CAD) | Common size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | 1979 | 999.9‰ | 50 | 1 oz |
| Silver | 1988 | 999.9‰ | 5 | 1 oz |
| Platinum | 1988 | 999.5‰ | 50 | 1 oz |
| Palladium | 2005 | 999.5‰ | 50 | 1 oz |
The statutory face value in Canadian dollars is symbolic; the actual trading value is based on the respective gold price or silver price plus the customary market premium (agio).
Security features and quality standards
The RCM is known for continuous innovation in coin protection. Modern Maple Leaf coins carry several layers of authenticity features:
- Radial Lines – finely machined lines in the background create a characteristic light-reflection effect
- Micro-Engraved Maple Leaf – a tiny, laser-engraved maple leaf with year on the value side (from 2013)
- Bullion DNA – digital registration of each coin for later verification at the dealer (from 2014)
These measures were introduced in response to increasing tungsten counterfeits and coating imitations. The Coin Authenticity Check helps to verify original parameters (weight, diameter, thickness).
Trading relevance and tax aspects
In Malta and the EU, Maple Leaf coins made of gold qualify as investment gold within the meaning of the EU VAT Directive (Directive 2006/112/EC) and are therefore VAT-exempt, provided they meet the statutory criteria (fineness ≥ 900‰, legal tender, minted after 1800). Silver Maple Leaf coins are subject to VAT at the Maltese standard rate of 18%. Malta levies no capital gains tax on private disposals of movable assets such as precious metals – Maltese capital gains tax applies only to specific assets (immovable property, securities, business interests). This note is no substitute for tax or investment advice; a tax adviser should be consulted in individual cases.
The high international liquidity of the Maple Leaf series makes it common among dealers worldwide; purchase prices are usually close to the spot price.
In brief
The Royal Canadian Mint stands for state-guaranteed purity at the highest level, mature security technology and decades of reliability. The Maple Leaf is one of the most-traded bullion coins in the world and a standard position in the precious-metal portfolios of private and institutional investors alike.
