Panda

The Panda is one of the best-known investment coins in the world and the flagship of Chinese precious-metal minting. Since 1982 the China Gold Coin Corporation (CGCC) has issued new editions annually on behalf of the People's Bank of China. What makes the Panda equally popular among collectors and investors is one unique feature: the motif of the giant panda on the reverse changes every year – a distinctive characteristic that is virtually unique among the major bullion coins. The current gold price and silver price determine the metal value; collector potential can raise the premium beyond that.

Issue versions and denominations

Pandas are minted in gold and silver; in addition there are rare platinum and palladium issues as well as gold-plated commemorative strikes.

Important change in 2016: Up to and including 2015, Gold Pandas were issued in ounces (1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz). From 2016 the switch was made to metric gram weights. The 30 g coin corresponds roughly to one troy ounce (31.1 g) but is not identical – a fact to bear in mind when using the coin weight checker.

Motif design

• Reverse: always a newly designed panda-bear motif – sometimes a single bear eating bamboo, sometimes a mother with a cub. The year and weight are entered here.
• Obverse: the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, the inscription "中华人民共和国" (People's Republic of China) as well as the face value and year.
• Exception 2001: the motif was not changed compared with 2000 – this issue is considered a special item among collectors.

Premium and collector value

The fineness of 999.9 ‰ (gold) matches the standard of other leading bullion coins such as the Maple Leaf or the Vienna Philharmonic. However, the premium (agio) on Pandas is typically somewhat higher than on comparable coins, because the annual motif change generates additional collector demand. Older years with particularly popular motifs can be traded well above the pure melt value.

Tax classification

Gold Pandas with a fineness of at least 995/1000 and a weight of at least 1 g fall under the VAT exemption for investment gold in the EU (Directive 2006/112/EC; in Malta implemented in national VAT law). Silver Pandas, by contrast, are subject to the standard VAT rate of 18%. On disposal, Malta levies no capital gains tax on private sales of movable assets such as coins; Maltese capital gains tax applies only to specific assets (immovable property, securities, business interests), and there is no German-style speculation period. Authenticity testing

Because Pandas are heavily traded internationally, counterfeits also circulate. Reliable testing methods:

1. Check weight and diameter with the coin weight checker and the coin dimensions check.
2. Ping test (sound test): genuine gold coins produce a bright, sustained tone.
3. Density (Archimedes' principle): gold has a density of about 19.3 g/cm³ – tungsten cores are at 19.25 g/cm³, which is why ultrasound or X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) is additionally recommended.
4. Buy exclusively from reputable dealers with a certificate of authenticity (blister/assay card).

In brief

The Panda combines a high purity standard (999.9 ‰ gold) with an annually changing motif, making it interesting both as a bullion coin at metal value and as a collector's item. Anyone who keeps an eye on the current gold price and knows the premium can quickly calculate the fair entry price themselves.
