Ice Melt Test (Silver)

The ice melt test uses the exceptionally high thermal conductivity of silver to distinguish genuine silver from fakes: an ice cube melts noticeably faster on a genuine silver coin or silver bar than on any other metal.
The ice melt test is one of the simplest and most effective home checks for silver. It is based on a unique physical property: at 429 W/(m·K), silver has the highest thermal conductivity of all metals. This means that an ice cube placed on a genuine silver coin or a genuine silver bar dissipates the body heat of the hand so efficiently that it melts visibly faster than on any other material.
How to perform the test
- Take the silver object (coin or bar) at room temperature in your hand so that it absorbs body heat.
- Carefully place a standard ice cube on the surface.
- Observe: with genuine silver the ice cube begins to melt immediately and clearly visibly – faster than on a comparable surface of glass, steel or copper.
The entire test takes only a few seconds. A stopwatch is not needed; the effect is obvious.

Fakes often consist of lead, steel, tungsten or alloys with significantly lower thermal conductivity. The heat transfer from the object to the ice cube is noticeably slower with these materials – the melting process sets in with a delay or proceeds sluggishly.
Limits and supplements
The ice melt test has one essential limitation: copper conducts heat almost as well as silver (401 vs. 429 W/(m·K)). A silver-plated copper coin passes the test without difficulty. The test therefore mainly rules out low-quality fakes made of lead, tin or steel – but not high-quality copper-based silver plating.
For reliable results, the ice melt test should be combined with further methods:
- Density measurement (Archimedes' principle): silver has a density of 10.49 g/cm³ – significantly higher than most substitute metals.
- Magnet test: silver is diamagnetic and is not attracted by a strong magnet.
- Ping test: a genuine silver coin produces a bright, long-lasting tone when tapped lightly.
- Coin weight checker and coin size checker: deviations from target dimensions indicate fakes.
For final certainty, a professional X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) or testing by a recognised refinery is recommended.
In brief
The ice melt test is a quick, free first check that reliably exposes crude fakes made of poor conductors – but it does not replace a fineness test and fails with silver-plated copper objects. As part of a multi-stage authenticity check it is nevertheless a valuable tool for every silver investor.
