Home Storage

Also: Self storage, Private storage, At-home storage

Home storage refers to the physical safekeeping of precious metals by the owner themselves – in a safe at home, in a bank deposit box or at another self-chosen location.

Anyone who buys physical gold or silver must sooner or later decide where the metal is to be kept. Home storage – that is, personal safekeeping without an intermediary service provider – is the most direct form of ownership: the investor has unrestricted access to their property at any time, without being dependent on third parties.

Forms of home storage

Depending on quantity, value and personal situation, various storage locations come into consideration:

Form Typical suitability Special feature
Home safe (built-in) Bars up to approx. 5 kg, coin collections Burglary protection through weight and fixing
Free-standing safe / cabinet safe Small quantities, first-time investors Inexpensive, but easier to transport
Bank deposit box Larger holdings No access outside opening hours; consider bank risk
Hiding place without a safe Emergency reserve / very small amounts Low level of protection, not insurable

Advantages of home storage

  • No counterparty risk: the metal is directly owned – no insolvency risk of a custodian, depository bank or ETF provider.
  • Immediate access: available around the clock, no lead time for withdrawals.
  • No ongoing storage fees: unlike professional vaulting services or bonded warehouses, no recurring costs arise.
  • Discreet holding: with a correct purchase (e.g. over the counter below the cash threshold) no reporting obligation towards third parties is required.

Risks and disadvantages

  • Theft and burglary: without a high-quality safe, the theft risk is considerable.
  • Fire and water damage: home contents insurance policies often cover precious metals only up to fixed sub-limits (frequently €1,000–2,000); a separate valuables add-on cover is advisable.
  • Limited insurability: large holdings can hardly be fully insured privately; professional art insurers or specialised providers are expensive.
  • No return opportunity: the metal earns no interest or dividends – the value depends solely on the spot price.
  • Lack of liquidity flexibility: when selling, the metal must be physically transported or presented to a dealer.

Insurance: what to watch out for

Insured value = current fine-weight spot price × quantity + premium (agio)

You can determine the current value of your holdings at any time with the gold calculator or the melt value calculator. Insurers often require proof of purchase (invoices, photos, serial numbers of bars).

Home storage vs. professional custody

Home storage is not the opposite of allocated gold in the broader sense – both forms establish direct ownership. The difference lies in the place of custody:

  • Home storage: the owner keeps the metal themselves, no third party is involved.
  • Allocated depository storage: a certified vaulting provider or bank stores metal assigned by name – with fees, but with professional protection.
  • Bonded warehouse: storage in a customs-free zone (e.g. Switzerland, Singapore) – relevant for larger holdings and cross-border flexibility.

Tax and legal notes

In Malta, gains from the private sale of physical investment gold and silver by private individuals are not subject to capital gains tax: Malta levies no capital gains tax on private disposals of movable assets such as precious metals. Maltese capital gains tax applies only to specific assets (immovable property, securities and business interests), so there is no German-style speculation period. Investment gold is exempt from VAT under the EU VAT Directive (Directive 2006/112/EC; bars ≥ 995 ‰, coins ≥ 900 ‰); for silver, platinum and palladium the standard Malta VAT rate of 18 % applies on purchase – however, dealers can under certain conditions apply the margin scheme, which reduces the effective tax burden. Note: this is not tax or investment advice – for individual questions please consult a tax adviser.

In brief

Home storage offers maximum control and no counterparty risk, but requires a well-considered security concept of safe, insurance and discreet handling. For small to medium holdings it is a practical and cost-efficient choice – for very large quantities it is worth comparing with professional custody solutions.
