Gold Nugget

Also: Nugget, Gold Lump, Natural Gold

A gold nugget is a naturally formed piece of native gold that comes directly from rock or river sediment and has not undergone any industrial melting process.

A gold nugget is a naturally formed piece of native gold - that is, gold in its elemental, metallic form, which emerges from gold-bearing rock or river sediment without human intervention. Unlike a gold bar, a nugget has no defined composition: alongside gold it always contains foreign material, above all silver (in which case it is called electrum), but also quartz, iron oxides or copper.

Formation and occurrence

Nuggets form in two ways:

  1. Primary deposits - hydrothermal gold veins in rock (e.g. quartz reefs). Weathering and erosion release the gold over millennia.
  2. Secondary placer deposits - the freed gold is transported by streams and rivers. Because of its high density (19.3 g/cm3) it sinks quickly and accumulates in calm zones and placer beds.

Classic find regions are Australia (Western Australia, Victoria), Alaska, Brazil, Russia (Urals, Siberia) and Papua New Guinea. The Australian nugget type - compact, often with a smooth surface - is today the best known on the collector and investment market.

Fineness and valuation

The fineness varies considerably by origin:

Origin Typical fineness
Western Australia 900-950 ‰
Alaska 850-920 ‰
Amazon / Brazil 700-850 ‰
Urals (Russia) 880-940 ‰

Because nuggets are not a standardised product, the actual gold content must be determined before sale - either by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) or by melting and assay at a refinery. The notional material value is calculated by the melt value calculator.

Melt value (EUR) = weight (g) x fineness (%) x gold price (EUR/g)

Nugget as a collector and investment object

Untreated nuggets often carry, in addition to their pure material value, a collector premium that is determined by shape, size, visual features and provable origin. Particularly aesthetic or heavy specimens achieve a marked premium over the melt price at auction.

For tax treatment in Malta: investment gold is VAT-exempt (Directive 2006/112/EC, as transposed into Maltese law), but this exemption requires bars of at least 995‰ or coins of at least 900‰ - a threshold that nuggets typically do not reach, so nuggets are generally subject to the 18% Maltese standard VAT rate. On disposal, Malta levies no capital gains tax on private disposals of movable assets such as precious metals; Maltese capital gains tax applies only to specific assets such as immovable property, securities and business interests. There is no German-style speculation holding period in Malta. Individual cases require professional tax advice - this text is not tax or investment advice.

When buying, insist on credible proof of origin, as counterfeit or misdeclared nuggets do occasionally circulate. An independent authenticity check by XRF or density measurement is recommended.

In brief

Gold nuggets are fascinating natural products with variable fineness and a market value composed of material value plus any collector premium. Anyone regarding them as an investment should clarify fineness and tax conditions in advance.
